Our 2010 Totals are in,
We had 53 hunts in 2010 and hunters harvested 91 hogs - largest was 317 pounds - several 200 /260 - lots of 100 / 180 and the smallest taken by Brad Fortish ( 6 years old ) was 32 pounds
Our 2011 Totals are in,
We had 41 hunts in 2011 and harvasted 73 hogs - the largest this year was 268 pounds - once again we had several 200 - 250 pound hogs lots of hogs in the 100 - 140 range and this years winner of the LITTLE PIGGY award goes to Mike Trator he harvasted a 43 pounder
We also had several coyote's taken ( we do allow coyote harvast with hog hunts, during season and with leagal permit )
Some of these hunts were 2 hunters, some were 4 / 5 hunters, not evryone who hunted here during 2010 harvasted a hog and there were hunting parties that did not even see a hog ( some of this is due to actual time hunting, weather, to much 4 wheeler riding not taking the shot for personal reasons, etc ) but everyone had a equal chance and a great time. Our Take A Child Hunting Program works during 2010 of the 91 hogs taken 7 were hunters under 16 that most likely would not have been there if we charged for thier hunt. I have children myself, that have missed hunting trips due to prices and as always I promise never to charge a child ( under age 16 ) to hunt on my property. I WOULD BURN IT DOWN BEFORE I REFUSED A PARENT TO BRING A CHILD. If you can get your child, grandchild ( whoever ) off the couch and away from the video game to go hunting with you, they are always welcom here. REMEMBER TAKE A CHILD HUNTING - DONT HUNT FOR THE CHILD
We did less hunts this year 2011 then in 2010 during 2011 we took some time to redo stands and have a lake put in and several wildlife water holes to try to give hogs a year round watering spot. Once again this year our take a Child Hunting Program showed to be effective.
Of the 73 hogs taken 12 were harvasted by hunters under the age of 16 that most likely would not have hunted if they had to pay. Again not everyone who hunted here harvasted a hog or even saw a hog - we had a few hunts that hunters did not even see a bird. We do NOT release or raise hogs here, so hunt time is important ( FERAL HOG ARE MOSTLY NOCTURNAL - night hunting is always best ) some hunting parties hunt more then others - some parties come to get away and enjoy time spent with friends and family and dont take full advantage of hunt time. Hunters that camped at property seem to do better - it is hard to leave a warm hotel bed to go sit in the cold or not stay pool side when it 90 plus to hunt with wasp - ticks and chiggers. I will say your hunt here is what you make of it - you will not sit for 10 min and shoot a hog - it just does not work like that . AND REMEMBER IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO TAKE A CHILD HUNTING THEN HUNT FOR THE CHILD
2012 Totals are in,
In 2012 we had 54 hunts and harvasted 83 feral hogs, the largest hog taken this year was 337 pounds ( we had several 250 \ 280 ) however the average size hog taken was in the 140 \ 170 range .We did do a few things in 2012 we had not in the past, we started letting hunters ( by choice ) use a box style trap during thier hunt . ( some hunters took advantage of this extra way of harvast some did not - those that did use the provided trap harvasted hogs during times they would not be hunting ) again not everyone that hunted here at Dakel harvasted a feral hog and some hunting parties did not even see one. I have noticed hunting parties that stay on the property always do better then those who hotel it and run back and forth ( it is hard to leave a hotel room with cable to sit in the woods) we had several coyote taken this year. We had a mountain lion sighting in dec and jan ( remember mountain lions are protected and MAY NOT be taken, but remember also they are around - I myself have never seen one or tracks , however I did see the pictures right infront of my feeders so I do believe we have them around ) we had several ( 11 ) youth hunters harvast feral hogs this year, again these hunters took advantage of our BRING A YOUTH HUNTING PROGRAM and were able to enjoy time spent outdoors with thier family and friends .
NOTE- WE DO HAVE A COUPLE CHANGES FOR 2013 PLEASE LOOK OVER COMPLETE WEBSITE AND NOTE CHANGES.
1) HUNTERS WHO BOOKED A 60 HOUR HUNT AND DID NOT HARVAST ARE ALLOWED A 50 PERCENT HALF OFF RETURN HUNT - THIS HUNT MUST BE USED ON A WEEKDAY HUNT EVEN IF ORIG HUNT WAS BOOKED FOR A WEEKEND - NO HALF PRICE RETURN HUNTS ON WEEKENDS AS OF 2013 -
IF YOU HUNTED PRIOR TO 2013, YOUR HUNT WILL STILL BE HONORED FOR WEEKDAAY OR WEEKEND RETURN
2) ANY HUNTER TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE BRING A YOUTH FOR FREE PROGRAM THAT CHOOSES TO ALLOW
THE YOUTH HUNTER TO HARVAST OVER THEM WILL COUNT THAT HOG AS THIER OWN AND NOT BE ALLOWED A HALF OFF RETURN HUNT - AS SAD AS IT IS, WE STARTED THIS TO GET KIDS OUTSIDE AND ENJOY THE OUTDOORS WITH FAMILY WITHOUT HAVING IT COST PARENTS MORE, HOWEVER WHAT IT HAS BECOME IS A WAY FOR GUYS TO HARVAST FERAL HOGS AND SAY ONLY THE FREE KIDS HARVASTED AND WE WANT TO BOOK OUR HALF PRICE HUNT. NOT EVERYONE HAS DONE THIS, BUT WE DO HAVE CAMERA'S ON PROPERTY AND SADLY THIS WAS THE CASE WITH SEVERAL HUNTS
3) NO HALF PRICE RETURN HUNT WILL BE GIVE TO HUNTERS WHO DONT HARVAST DURING A 36 HOUR HUNT -
( HUNTERS WHO CHOOSE NOT TO STAY ON PROPERTY, MORE THEN OFTEN SPEND LITTLE TIME HUNTING AND WE CAN NOT OFFER A HALF PRICE HUNT TO A PARTY THAT HUNTED VERY LITTLE AND DID NOT HARVAST )
AS STATED ABOVE NOT EVERYONE THAT HUNTED HARVASTED A FERAL HOG, HOWEVER EVERYONE WAS GIVEN THE SAME CHANCE AND HAD A GOOD TIME. HUNTING IS WHAT THE PERSON MAKES OF IT - WE DO NOT RAISE OR RELEASE HOGS - WE DO NOT TIE THEM TO A TREE - YOU MUST HUNT - YOU MUST SIT OUT AND PUT THE TIME IN - IF YOU THINK YOU WILL GET OUT OF YOUR TRUCK, DRINK A BEER WALK TO A STAND AND SHOOT A HOG, "YOUR WRONG"
DO NOT SHOOT NEAR BARN OR CAMP SITE AREA !!!!!!!!!!
I CAN SEE SHOOTING IN THIS AREA IF A HOG IS PRESENT, HOWEVER THE CHANCES OF SITTING NEXT TO THE FIRE , DRINKING A BEER AND HAVING A HOG WALK OUT IS SLIM - THIS IS NOT A RANGE AREA AND WE ALWAYS TAKE SAFETY FIRST - IT SEEMS ALOT OF GUYS LIKE TO SIT AND TARGET SHOOT - THIS IS FINE AND I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH IT, JUST WALK UP IN FIELD OR WOODS - NOT RIGHT INFRONT OF BARN OR CORRAL AREA - AND REMEMBER THE MORE SHOTS FIRED - THE LESS YOU WILL SEE.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT FERAL HOGS-
FERAL OR WILD HOGS IN MO. ARE MUTTS WITH GENETIC COMBINATIONS THAT INCLUDE RUSSIAN OR EURASIAN WILD BOARS ( RAZOR BACKS ) AN ASSOTMENT OF DOMESTIC VARIETIES SUCH AS YORKSHIRE, HAMPSHIRE OR DURAC AND YES EVEN POT BELLIED PIGS.FEMALES CAN BEGIN BREEDING IN THIER 6TH MONTH OF LIFE AND HAVE 2 LITTERS OF 10 EVERY YEAR. THIS LEVEL OF REPRODUTION CAN DOUBLE A HOG POPULATION IN 160 DAYS. FERAL HOGS REACH OVER 400 POUNDS IN SIZE - HOWEVER MOST FERAL HOGS ARE BETWEEN 130 \ 180 POUNDS. BOARS HAVE 4 SHARP TUSK THAT GROW ABOUT 5 INCHES. HOGS CAN BE SEVERAL COLORS INCLUDING GREY, RED ,BLACK , BLOND AND SPOTTED. SOME FERAL HOGS LOOK LIKE DOMESTIC HOGS AND SOME LOOK LIKE WILD BOARS. ALL HAVE SMALL EYES, LARGE TRIANGULAR EARS AND A LONG SNOUT ENDING IN A LONG RAOUND NOSE. WHEN HUNTING WITH A BOW ALWAYS HAVE A BACK UP FIREARM ( CONSERVATION ALLOWS BOW HUNTERS TO CARRY FIREARM ONLY WHILE HUNTING FERAL HOGS ) THINGS TO REMEMBER FOR YOUR HUNT INCLUDE SPOT LIGHT -EXTRA FIREARM - AMMO -COVER SENT - COVER SENT - COVER SENT - TRASH BAGS - COOLERS - MEAT PAPER - ZIP LOCK BAGS - FLASH LIGHTS ( SEVERAL )- CAMERA-PERSONAL ITEMS - BUT MOST OF ALL COVER SENT - COVER SENT - COVER SENT
NOTE- THESE ARE WILD FERAL HOGS IN OUR AREA - WE DO NOT RELEASE OR RAISE HOGS TO HUNT
HOG HUNTING TIPS-
1) WHEN STAND HUNTING- APPROACH YOUR STAND FROM A DIFFERENT DIRECTION THEN YOU EXPECT THE HOGS TO APPROACH FROM. REMEMBER HOGS EYESIGHT ISN'T GREAT BUT THEY HAVE A SUPER SENSE OF SMELL.
2) BAITING HOGS WERE LEGAL IS A EXCELLENT WAY TO GET HOGS INTO BOW RANGE ( HOWEVER ALWAYS CARRY BACK UP FIREARM)
3) PLAN TO CHANGE STANDS IF YOU SHOOT AT OR MISS A HOG - MOST LIKELY THAT HOG OR THAT GROUP OF HOGS WILL NOT COME BACK INTO VIEW OF THAT STAND
4) HOGS HAVE A SORT OF SHIELD AROUND THE VITALS - THE BEST SHOT JUST LIKE WITH DEER IS A QUARTERING AWAY SHOT.
5) HOGS WILL TRAVEL ANYWHERE- BUT GENERALLY PREFER TO BED AND TRAVEL CLOSE TO WATER AND IN " THICK " COVER
6) HUNT WITH RIFLE \ HIDE IN SAFE BOX BLIND \ USE PHEROMONES \ IF YOU SEE A PIGLET ALONE, USE CAUTION MOTHER WONT BE FAR AWAY
7) THE MOST IMPORTANT IS ACTUAL STAND TIME - DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS THE WOODS ARE VERY THICK AND MOST HUNTERS HUNT FIELD FEEDER SITES, NIGHT ACTION IS THE BEST ( FROM ABOUT 9:00 PM TILL 7:00 AM ) MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO SIT FOR HOURS IN THE DARK - OFF ( BUG SPRAY ) GOOD COVER SENT - FOOD ATTRACTANT - LIGHT ( BACK UP LIGHT ) - WHATEVER WILL KEEP YOU THERE.
I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH, DURING HOT TIMES OF THE YEAR HOGS ARE MOSTLY ACTIVE DURING LATE PM AND EARLY AM HOURS - THIS MEANS YOU WILL NEED TO BE IN STANDS DURING NIGHT TIME HOURS AND TRY TO AVOID HIGH ACTIVITY DURING THE DAY AROUND YOUR HUNTING SIGHT.
CAMP FIRES - WE DO ALLOW CAMP FIRES, WE ASK THAT YOU ONLY BUILD A FIRE IN FIRE PIT AREA NEAR TRAILER CAMPING AREA. WE ALSO ASK YOU DO NOT BURN THE WHOLE PILE OF STACKED FIRE WOOD ( MOST HUNTING PARTIES ARE VERY GOOD ABOUT THIS - SOME HOWEVER THINK A 20 FOOT LONG 6 FOOT HIGH PILE OF CUT , SPLIT WOOD IS A LITTLE - AND WONDER WHY AFTER SITTING BY A HUGE FIRE FOR 60 HOURS THEY ARE NOT SEEING ANY HOGS - REMEMBER COVER SENT - COVER SENT - COVER SENT - NOT SMOKE SENTED ) THERE IS PLENTY OF WOOD AROUND, AFTER BUILDING YOUR FIRE TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND PICK SOME UP. THE AVERAGE HUNTING PARTY HAS 4 GUYS IN IT , WITHIN A FEW MINUTES YOU WILL HAVE MORE WOOD THEN YOU CAN BURN.
